BluCr® – a big step towards the future sustainability of hard chrome plating

Since the 1920s, the success of hard chrome plating has been unquestionable. However, recent legislation restricting the use of hexavalent chromium substances has jeopardized the future of the processes currently in use. Since September 2017, the EU has tightened requirements for the use of the chemical compound Cr(VI) in surface treatment processes. As a result, many companies are faced with the task of finding alternative processes that do not contain hazardous CR(VI) substances.

Atotech was the first company to commercially release a functional trivalent hard chrome process to replace hexavalent hard chrome. The trivalent chromium BluCr® process, which can be used in a wide range of applications, eliminates hexavalent chromium and toxic lead anodes, making hard chrome plating significantly less hazardous for platers and the environment alike while providing all the same benefits of hexavalent hard chrome processes.
