Berlin, 02 October, 2024 – Atotech, a leading surface finishing brand within the Materials Solutions Division of MKS Instruments, will participate in The Battery Show North America 2024, held from October 7 to 10, 2024, at the Huntington Place Detroit, USA.
Now in its 14th year, The Battery Show North America is the continent’s largest advanced battery event, drawing engineers, business leaders, and industry innovators to explore cutting-edge products and solutions. Alongside over 1,150 exhibitors, the show offers four days of educational sessions, networking opportunities, and the latest market innovations. This premier event attracts buyers and decision-makers from various sectors, all seeking the latest technologies to drive the future of battery and electric vehicle advancements.
At The Battery Show North America, we will present our leading surface finishing solutions for EV, HEV, and PHEV batteries, including adhesion promotion processes and more environmentally friendlier Cr(VI)-free solutions for current collector foils, as well as pre-treatment, anti-tarnishes tarnishing and silver, nickel, and tin plating processes for connectors and busbars. We will also showcase solutions with improved sustainability for battery housings and fasteners, including highly conductive and soft magnetic electroplated layers for electromagnetic shielding.
MKS’ Atotech offers perfectly matched processes for every step of the surface finishing application, from pretreatment to final sealing for an array of battery components, helping enhance the overall battery performance and durability.
Our products enhance corrosion resistance, conductivity, and adhesion properties in various battery components, including current collectors, terminals, and enclosures. They also benefit components like laminated foil bags for pouch cells or nickel-plated cylindrical enclosures.
Our aluminum surface treatment processes assist customers in meeting new requirements for corrosion resistance and improving adhesion to paints, fire retardant coatings, or structural adhesive bonding. By combining these products with our low-temperature, long-life pretreatment solutions, customers can significantly reduce their CO2 emissions.
Our highlights will include:
Cr(VI)-free anti-tarnish treatment for current collector copper foils:
CuProtect® XL ‒ Cr(VI)-free post-treatment, operating at high speed in high current densities with short exposition times.
Argalin® XL – Chromium-based anti-tarnish, ROHS compatible (CrIII) for silver, copper, and nickel plating processes for busbars and connectors
Silvertech® RBH – Cyanide-based hard silver-plating process (180 HV)
Silvertech® MSH – High-speed hard-silver plating process (130 HV & 15–20 ASD)
Corrosion-protection solutions for steel battery housings:
Reflectalloy® ZNA + Tridur® DB + Sealer 300 W 2.0 – Alkaline zinc nickel electrolyte with passivate and sealer providing the highest corrosion protection and enhancing the adhesion to subsequent coatings such as fire retardants
Pretreatment solutions for aluminum battery housings and more sustainable paint removal processes for parts reclamation:
UniPrep® – Long life, low-temperature degreasers suitable for steel and aluminum battery components
Interlox® – Zirconium-based conversion coatings and passivates for enhanced corrosion protection and paint adhesion
Master Remover® – This more sustainable paint removal process is ideal for part reclamation and rack and fixture cleaning
Highly conductive and soft magnetic electroplated layers for electromagnetic shielding:
Cupracid® EMS – High-speed low-stress copper plating electrolyte
Corrosion-protection processes for increased adhesion in lead-tab manufacturing:
Satilume® Plus – Unique matte nickel surface for higher adhesion and better corrosion resistance
Adhesion promoters and processes for solder joint improvement for lead-frame IC packages and Printed Circuit Boards:
MoldPrepTM – Adhesion promotor between copper and mold material to improve MSL test level and survive heat treatment
Stanna-Q® – Immersion-tin process specifically designed to form 3D solder joints on QFN wettable flanks
The company will also be showcasing solutions with improved sustainability for battery fasteners, highly conductive and soft magnetic electroplated layers for electromagnetic shielding, and improved corrosion protection for anode lead tabs preventing the formation of hydrofluoric acid within the battery pouch pack.
Corrosion-protection solutions for steel fasteners:
Zinni® AL 450 + Tridur® DB + Sealer 350 WL8 – Alkaline zinc nickel electrolyte with cobalt-free passivate and lubricated sealer which provide highest corrosion protection and guarantee stable friction characteristics as well as good conductivity.
Advanced solutions for battery terminals:
ELeVEN® LP 350 – Low phosphorus electroless nickel process designed to provide low electrical resistance, uniform thickness distribution, and excellent solderability.
On Tuesday, October 8, 2024, at 4:45 pm, our battery solutions specialist, Konstantin Thom, will speak on the topic: “Degradation effects and corrosion management in lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles” in the blue hall of the Huntington Place.
