Pune, India, 21 August 2024 – MKS’ Atotech, a leading surface finishing brand within the Materials Solutions Division of MKS Instruments, recently organized an industry-focused seminar titled “Responsible Business ‒ Fueling Growth with Sustainable Practices” in Pune, India. The event brought together key stakeholders, including Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), Tier 1 suppliers, and industry experts, to discuss the evolving regulatory landscape and strategies for achieving zero carbon footprint goals.
The seminar featured insights from MKS’ Atotech experts, including Rohen Bhatnagar, Amit Gupta, Shahab Shakeel, and Himanshu Chauhan, who shared their extensive knowledge and technical experience on critical issues such as the upcoming bans on hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), as well as the growing demand for carbon neutrality in manufacturing.
The seminar underscored the importance of surface treatment technology in producing high-quality products and explored how the Indian plating industry, supported by OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers, is actively seeking advanced, sustainable, and intelligent surface treatment solutions.
As global and regional regulations tighten, manufacturers are prioritizing carbon accounting and managing supplier emissions. MKS’ Atotech has responded by developing a product-level Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) using cradle-to-gate principles based on ISO 14040 standards. This approach offers a comprehensive view of a product’s environmental impact across all stages of its life cycle.
MKS’ Atotech highlighted several strategies to help customers reduce their carbon footprint, particularly in corrosion protection. These include optimizing raw material usage, enhancing process performance at lower temperatures, reducing chemical consumption, and utilizing high-performance auxiliary equipment. These measures also contribute to reducing waste generation and easing the burden of wastewater treatment.
The seminar concluded with a panel discussion featuring industry leaders Nilesh Ranaware, Jashish Kambli, and Gurusharan Dhillon. The panel addressed global and regional sustainability challenges, regulatory developments in India, and their feasibility within the surface finishing industry. The engaging dialogue provided valuable insights into how businesses can navigate the complex regulatory landscape while driving sustainable growth.
MKS’ Atotech extends its sincere thanks to all participants for their active engagement and contributions, making the seminar a significant step towards a more sustainable future in the surface finishing industry.
